What to Expect on Forestry Mulching Day

If you've never had forestry mulching done, here's what it actually looks like, from the walkthrough to the last pass, so there are no surprises.

Quick take
  • Walkthrough first: we flag what stays and what goes.
  • Prep is easy: clear a spot for the trailer, move vehicles, and keep kids and pets inside.
  • It's loud and it's fast. Most homeowners are surprised how much gets done in a day.
  • When we leave: open ground, a mulch layer, low stumps, nothing to haul.

Before the job: the walkthrough

We walk the property with you and talk through what you want gone and what you want kept. Trees you want saved get flagged. We'll also ask about:

  • Property lines and anything you're unsure about
  • Septic systems, leach fields, irrigation and buried lines
  • Fences, old junk, metal or debris in the brush. Hidden stuff is the main thing that slows a job down.
  • Where the truck and trailer can park and how we get in

Then you get a price, either a hard price or a day rate depending on the job.

How to prep

  • Leave room for the truck and trailer to park and unload.
  • Move cars, boats and anything else out of the work area.
  • Pull anything you want to keep out of the brush.
  • Give your neighbors a heads-up. It's loud.
  • Plan to keep kids and pets inside while machines are running. Mulchers throw chips.

The day of

We're early starters. The crew unloads, walks the flagged areas one more time, and gets to work. A forestry mulcher is a tracked machine with a spinning drum of carbide teeth on the front. It walks into the brush and grinds it into chips right where it stands.

  • It's loud. Think chainsaw, but bigger.
  • It's fast. Most people are surprised how quickly the brush disappears.
  • Stay clear. If you want to talk to the crew, wave and wait for the machine to shut down. Never walk up on a running mulcher.

On bigger jobs we bring more than one machine. We run multiple CAT 299s with Fecon heads, a CMI C175 for heavy material, and a Ventrac for steep ground.

When we're done

  • Open ground where the brush was, with your flagged trees still standing.
  • A layer of mulch. It protects the soil and breaks down over time.
  • Stumps ground low to the ground.
  • No burn piles, no brush piles, nothing to haul.
  • Some track marks, especially if the ground was soft. They smooth out.

After the job

Expect regrowth from the roots the next growing season, especially honeysuckle. That's normal. A recut before it turns woody keeps it down. If you want lawn where the brush was, we can get the ground ready for seeding.

Common questions

How long does forestry mulching take?

It depends on acreage and how thick it is, but it's fast. A lot of residential jobs are done in a day or two. We'll give you an idea at the walkthrough.

Do I need to be home during forestry mulching?

Not necessarily, once we've walked it together and the keepers are flagged. Just make sure we can get in and the work area is clear.

What's left after forestry mulching?

Open ground covered in a mulch layer, stumps ground low, and the trees you wanted kept. No piles and nothing to haul.

Will forestry mulching damage my yard?

Our tracked machines are easy on the ground. You may see some track marks, especially on soft ground, and they smooth out. We plan around wet conditions.
